TEAZER ‘AVANT GARDE’ - SOLO SHOW
THURSDAY OCTOBER 29 – NOVEMBER 5th
If you’re the adventurous type, wandering through Sydney’s inner city or the eastern suburbs, you’ve probably wandered past Teazer.
Graffiti writer and artist Teazer has been sharing his work in the streets and creating public murals prolifically for the last few years. Teazer’s work ranges from tight pieces to manga characters and portraits from photos. Everything is a remix. Magazines, music, skate art and Coco Pops boxes, mixed with graffiti lettering, stencils and street signs. Teazer’s work provokes with the idea that nothing is an original thought and that so much of our lives are consumed with media.
Teazer grew up in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and inner city, skating, sneaking out at night and being rebellious. He has been writing since 1989, influenced by what he saw in Bondi and images from the New York subway art that had just started at the time, he says something about it made him feel alive. Teazer developed his own style, sharp aggressive letters that can stand up for themselves and make a statement on their own.
Like his street work, Teazer’s artwork utilises different techniques for board, canvas or found objects. The technique isn’t as important as the look of the final work, whether freehand or taped, it has to be clean, handmade and finished to Teazer’s standards of precision.
Teazer’s new solo show explores the last few years of his work on the street and mixes it up. The show opens 6pm on Thursday 29th October at Oh Really Gallery, 55 Enmore Road, Newtown.
